How Parents Encourage Their Kids to Open Up


The bond between parents and their children is an amazing one, but there comes an age when the relationship seems shaky. Together with our mental health counseling in North Carolina, here are some strategies for parents to create an environment where children feel comfortable sharing their worries.

  • Active listening

    Give your undivided attention when your child wants to talk. Show that you are genuinely interested in what they have to say. Put away distractions and make eye contact to convey that you are there for them.

  • Non-judgmental attitude

    Create a safe space by being non-judgmental. Let your child know that they can share their feelings without fear of punishment or criticism. Avoid jumping to conclusions, offering immediate solutions, or coming off like a therapist. You are their parent – first and foremost.

  • Empathy

    Show empathy and understanding. Acknowledge your child’s feelings and let them know that it’s normal to have concerns and emotions. Validate their experiences, even if they seem trivial to you.

  • Open-ended questions

    Instead of asking yes/no questions, use open-ended questions that encourage your child to express themselves more fully. For example, ask, “Can you tell me more about what’s been bothering you?” rather than “Is everything okay?”

  • Timing and setting

    Choose an appropriate time and setting for discussions. Some children may prefer to talk during one-on-one moments, while others may open up more during shared activities like cooking, walking, or playing.
