Is Medication Right for Me?

To determine if medication might be of benefit, the first step is to meet with a clinician for an evaluation of your symptoms. If your symptoms result in significant diminish of your social functioning and overall quality of life, the evaluating clinician may suggest a medication evaluation from one of our partner providers.

If you are confused or concerned about your prescriber’s recommendations, ask questions so that you understand his or her rationale and the treatment plan.

Who Can Prescribe Medication for Me?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who most commonly specialize in prescribing psychotropic medication. In many cases, nurse practitioners or physician assistants specializing in psychiatry and working under the supervision of a medical doctor may evaluate and prescribe medications when needed.

Understanding Your Medications

If you are prescribed a medication, be sure that you:

  • Tell the doctor about all medications and vitamin supplements you are already taking.
  • Inform your doctor of any allergies or adverse reactions you have had with medicines.
  • Take your medicine exactly as prescribed and have instructions of what to do if you miss a dose.
  • Never take medicines prescribed for another person or share your medication with someone else.
  • Call your doctor right away if you experience side effects or any problems with your medicine
  • Never adjust or stop taking your prescription without the advice of your doctor. to a different one that may work better for you.
